John Sez: Author Jeremy Scahill is still hot on the trail of XE (formerly Blackwater) and the killers-for-hire company’s clandestine actions being conducted at the behest of the Obama administration. The latest shocking report by Scahill wonders why no one seems to want to comment on exactly what XE is up to in Pakistan; or why, when the question is posed by the press, a massive game of ‘pass-the-buck’ is perpetrated on the journalist who begs the question, much in the style of a classic cover up. Even more concerning is the intimidation tactics being used by the Joint Chief of Staff’s office to scare Scahill off the story. A representative of Admiral Mullin (the chief muckety-muck of the Joint Chiefs) called Scahill to categorically deny Scahill’s findings – before the story itself was even published! This pre-emptive strike on a journalist tells me that Scahill is very close to the truth of the matter, or he’s close enough to the mark make some very powerful people very uncomfortable. Either way, this attempt to chill the freedom of the press and speech is dangerious. Respect to Mr. Scahill – he is a very courageous man who should be the template for all modern journalists. Imagine if we saw this kind of dogged reporting on the TV news every night... Story from Rebel Reports: Why Is the State Department Speaking for JSOC? By Jeremy Scahill Interesting chain of command issues seem to be emerging in the official “denials” being offered about my story in The Nation magazine on Blackwater and the Joint Special Operations Command operations in Pakistan. A few hours before the piece was published, I received a call—unprompted—from the office of Admiral Mike Mullen, Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I had not called them. The representative that called would not officially—named and on-the-record—deny the story. Instead, I was offered a comprehensive denial from a “defense official” on “background.” The DoD spokesman Geoff Morell was asked about it on Tuesday. He said the appropriate agency to address this was the State Department, but he did characterize the story as “conspiratorial:” ""REPORTER: Thank you for taking the question. Does the Pentagon have any comment on a report in The Nation today that, puts Blackwater, now Xe Services, firmly at the center of a covert operation in Karachi in Pakistan, from an anonymous source within the military. And my question is — MR. MORRELL: Yes, I — I — REPORTER: The question is, you keep denying covert operations in Pakistan, but isn’t this yet more evidence of one? MR. MORRELL: Okay, the best person to address this would be the State Department spokesman, who has already put out a statement, or a correction, basically saying these accusations are entirely false. Okay? But I — for more clarity and more specificity, I urge you to talk to them. As for what we are doing in Afghanistan — or in Pakistan, rather, I think we have been incredibly forthright about this. And we have basically, I think, a few dozen forces on the ground in Pakistan who are involved in a train-the-trainer mission. These are Special Operations Forces. We’ve been very candid about this. They are — they have been for months, if not years now, training Pakistani forces so that they can in turn train other Pakistani military on how to — on certain skills and operational techniques. And that’s the extent of our — our, you know, military boots on the ground in Pakistan. Despite whatever conspiratorial theories that, you know, magazines or broadcast outlets may want to cook up, there is nothing to it. And obviously, we’ve also made it perfectly clear that we are willing and able and happy to help the Pakistani military in any other ways that they may see fit. But at this point, that’s the extent to which they would like our help, in terms of American boots on the ground. And so we are totally respectful of that. And that’s what it’s limited to at this point. "" Since when is the State Department spokesman the official spokesperson for JSOC? Since when is the DoS the appropriate party to address allegations regarding US military operations? READ MORE INQUIRY PROOVES BLAIR LIED ENGLAND INTO IRAQ 11/27/2009
John Sez: It seems that Tony Blair definitively knew that the whole WMD in Iraq story was based on bad intelligence, and yet he led his country into an alliance of war with the US against Iraq. That being said, if Blair knew about this intelligence is there any doubt at all that Bush and company knew what Blair knew – and probably a whole lot more as well. The only question left is this: why are these people not being brought before a trail or tribunal for lying their respective countries into war against a sovereign nation and causing millions of deaths in the process? Wouldn’t that send a clear and simple message that the people of the world will no longer tolerate half-assed, greedy dictators to spill the blood of innocent lives (while raking in untold billions in profit)? Or is that just the message that the powers that be are afraid will resonate with people around the world? Story from the Daily Mail: Blair lied and lied again: Mandarins reveal that 10 days before Iraq invasion PM knew Saddam couldn't use WMDs By Tim Shipman The full extent of how Tony Blair misled the public about Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction before and after the Iraq War was laid bare yesterday. The Chilcot Inquiry heard that just ten days before the invasion of Iraq Mr Blair was told Saddam had no way of using weapons of mass destruction. And weapons experts revealed that the former Prime Minister took Britain to war based on intelligence that his own spies rated just 'four out of ten' for accuracy. On the eve of the conflict, intelligence chiefs told Mr Blair that the Iraqi dictator had no warheads capable of delivering chemical weapons, dramatically undermining the Prime Minister's case for war. Yet Mr Blair gave the go-ahead for the invasion despite strong evidence that Iraq was no threat to Britain. With all the bad that Blackwater has done, ranging to bribery to outright mass murder, why are they still garnering contracts from the federal government worth billions of dollars? One would think that Nobel Peace Prize recipient Obama would put his foot down and cancel the contracts of these goons and psychopaths. One would think that, but one would be proven wrong as Blackwater is still on the job. Scahill offers up the premise that the reason that these murderers for hire are still in business due to their knowing a whole lot of dirty little secrets about the wars we are fighting and, perhaps, knowing where all the bodies are buried so to speak. Basically his claim is that the government is being blackmailed by Blackwater in order to keep them on the payroll. At first, such an accusation would seem ludicrous on its face. But considering what lengths Obama has gone through to protect the last administration from facing a huge variety of charges (including war crimes) and how hard he has fought to keep the torture photos from ever seeing the light of day, it makes all too perfect sense that he would do the same for the cream-of-the-scumbag crop known as Blackwater (or Xe, or whatever they are calling themselves these days), all in the name of saving the Federal government ‘embarrassment’. I guess this may be more of that change we can believe in, eh? Story from Raw Story: Scahill: Obama may be afraid of Blackwater Despite news reports that the security contractor formerly known as Blackwater has seen its contracts dry up and its influence wane, the company continues to do brisk business in Iraq and Afghanistan -- and the Obama administration may be too afraid of the firm to do anything about it, says investigative reporter Jeremy Scahill. "You know who's guarding Hillary Clinton in Afghanistan right now? Blackwater," Scahill told MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Tuesday night. "You know who guards members of Congress? Blackwater. They have half a billion dollars in contracts in Afghanistan right now. CIA, State Department, Defense Department. Why is President Obama keeping these guys on the payroll? There has never been a company in recent history that made the case that corporations are corrupt, evil organizations [better] than Blackwater." Scahill was on The Rachel Maddow Show discussing the New York Times' revelation that senior Blackwater executives allegedly arranged for bribes of up to $1 million for Iraqi politicians in a bid to retain its contracts and silence criticism of the company in the wake of the Nissour Square massacre in 2007, in which 17 Iraqi civilians died after Blackwater guards opened fire. John Sez: Today is Veteran’s day. I could go ahead and write a piece about patriotism, or how wonderful the military is, or about the sacrifice that many who have worn the uniforms of our services, but I think that sometimes a simple yet heartfelt statement can effectively get one’s point across better than a wordy essay. With that in mind, I say to all of our Veteran’s on behalf of my family as well as myself: Thank you. John Sez: Never mind that the guy is 81 years old, which brings into question what was on the mind of the 4 men in uniform who pulled him over and tased him. But WHY is the military patrolling the highways of Alaska when that is strictly prohibited and ILLEGAL according to the Posse Comitatus Act? Story from Fairbanks NewsMiner: 81-year-old Tasered by Eielson Air Force Base police by Chris Freiberg FAIRBANKS — An 81-year-old man was Tasered during a traffic stop last week. It is the second time since 1998 that police have had to make a show of force during a traffic stop to arrest Glen M. Wilcox, a Fairbanks-based Episcopalian priest and real estate agent. Court documents allege that officers with Eielson Air Force Base’s 354th Security Forces Squadron pulled Wilcox over just after 1 p.m. Wednesday for going 11 miles over the speed limit on the Richardson Highway. An officer, identified as a senior airman in court documents, took Wilcox’s license, registration and proof of insurance and wrote him a traffic citation. When he returned to Wilcox’s car, Wilcox refused to accept the documents and sped down the highway, according to a criminal complaint filed in court. Wilcox disputes that version of events. READ MORE John Sez: Ahmed Wali Karzai is a suspected big-wig in Afghanistan’s drug trade, which is a large part of the funding for the forces our soldiers are fighting in Afghanistan - and is also receiving a check from our tax dollars via the CIA. The brother of the President of Afghanistan is apparently getting paid to recruit and direct a private mercenary force which acts at the behest of the CIA. Considering we already have a great many boots on the ground (as well as mercenaries and contractors hired by our government), the only reasons that I can think of which would explain why the CIA would need to bankroll yet another mercenary force in Afghanistan is to grease the palms of the power players (in this case the Karzai family)and to have a group of killers for hire that will commit themselves to acts of violence that our military would consider illegal according to their charter and rules. Additionally, such a mercenary force would not fall under the direct scrutiny of congressional oversight, which mean that they could be directed to do just about anything. Indeed, it seems that these mercenaries (known as the Kandahar Strike Force) have already been used in a political assassinations and thuggery, one instance resulting in the bloody murder of Kandahar’s provincial police chief. According to the New York Times, hundreds of millions of dollars are being made from the drug trade in Afghanistan, with a good portion of that money going into the coffers of the Taliban. So, in effect, the CIA has on its payroll a man who is funding the very people our military claims we are fighting; in other words, our tax dollars are being used to create a perpetual war footing in Afghanistan, as well as being spent to fund the very same groups that are killing our soldiers. And our President and Congress are allowing it to happen. Story from the New York Times: Brother of Afghan Leader Said to Be Paid by C.I.A. By DEXTER FILKINS, MARK MAZZETTI and JAMES RISEN KABUL, Afghanistan — Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of the Afghan president and a suspected player in the country’s booming illegal opium trade, gets regular payments from the Central Intelligence Agency, and has for much of the past eight years, according to current and former American officials. The agency pays Mr. Karzai for a variety of services, including helping to recruit an Afghan paramilitary force that operates at the C.I.A.’s direction in and around the southern city of Kandahar, Mr. Karzai’s home. The financial ties and close working relationship between the intelligence agency and Mr. Karzai raise significant questions about America’s war strategy, which is currently under review at the White House. The ties to Mr. Karzai have created deep divisions within the Obama administration. The critics say the ties complicate America’s increasingly tense relationship with President Hamid Karzai, who has struggled to build sustained popularity among Afghans and has long been portrayed by the Taliban as an American puppet. The C.I.A.’s practices also suggest that the United States is not doing everything in its power to stamp out the lucrative Afghan drug trade, a major source of revenue for the Taliban. Presidential Security Council chief Nikolai Patrushev also singled out the U.S. and NATO, saying Moscow's Cold War foes still pose potential threats to Russia despite what he called a global trend toward local conflicts The interview appeared in the daily Izvestia during a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, as U.S. and Russian negotiators try to hammer out a nuclear arms reduction treaty by December. John Sez: So much for this not being mandatory, eh? Realistically, I do understand that the military is not subject to the same ‘rules’ concerning vaccines as the civilian population. Ask anyone who has served and you’ll hear stories about how they received a variety of shots while they were in…and how, when they asked what the shots were for, many times were told nothing (or, perhaps, got chewed out for even daring to ask). But, let’s get back to the fact that the shot that is being given to our people in uniform has not been tested for safety at all – which means that the potential side effects of the vaccine are being tested out on our military. One might think that this is simply supposition, but Air Force General Gene Renuart recently stated: "Because I can compel people to get the shots, larger numbers will have the vaccine. They will, as a percentage of the population, be vaccinated more rapidly than many of us. So we may see some objective results, good or not, of the vaccinations." Nuclear fallout, depleted uranium, and now the swine flu shot – personally, I think it’s time to stop using our military as guinea pigs. Story from AP: Military to get mandatory swine flu shots soon By LOLITA C. BALDOR (AP) WASHINGTON — U.S. military troops will begin getting required swine flu shots in the next week to 10 days, with active duty forces deploying to war zones and other critical areas going to the front of the vaccine line, a top military commander said Tuesday. Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart also told The Associated Press that as many as 400 troops are ready to go to five regional headquarters around the country to assist federal health and emergency management officials if needed as the flu season heats up. The Pentagon has bought 2.7 million vaccines, and 1.4 million of those will go to active duty military. National Guard troops on active duty are also required to receive the vaccine, as are civilian Defense Department employees who are in critical jobs. As a result, the military is expected to provide health officials with an early assessment of the vaccine. "Because I can compel people to get the shots, larger numbers will have the vaccine," said Renuart, commander of U.S. Northern Command. "They will, as a percentage of the population, be vaccinated more rapidly than many of us. So we may see some objective results, good or not, of the vaccinations." John Sez: Blackwater founder Eric Prince was recently accused of ordering the murders of whistleblowers against his company. Now it has come out that he may have been directing murders not only of whistleblowers, but of civilians where his mercenaries were stationed, doing so from a wired up remote control room at the company’s base in North Carolina. Yet, for some reason, the Obama administration keeps on signing over the checks to keep this company in the government’s employ. Another thing I don’t understand: Why is it that the TV media is not covering this blockbuster of a story? Stroy from the Virginia Pilot: Another lawsuit targets founder of Blackwater Yet another civil lawsuit accuses Blackwater guards of driving through the streets of Baghdad randomly shooting innocent Iraqis. The latest case accuses Blackwater founder Erik Prince of personally directing murders from a 24-hour remote monitoring "war room" at the private military company's Moyock, N.C., headquarters. Prince "personally directed and permitted a heavily-armed private army... to roam the streets of Baghdad killing innocent civilians," alleges the suit, filed by four Iraqi citizens. Prince was well aware that his men, including top executives, "viewed shooting innocent Iraqis as sport," the suit says. In fact, "those who killed and wounded innocent Iraqis tended to rise higher in Mr. Prince's organization than those who abided by the rule of law." John Sez: This is an affront to anyone who voted for Obama (as well as those who didn’t) in hopes he would end the needless wars we are involved in. This move serves two purposes: first, so the White House can play a little politics with the general public and say, “See, we lessened the number of troops in Iraq”, when, in fact, they will have raised the number of boots on the ground (and spend more of tax-payer money on overpriced contractors); second, so they can redeploy these soldiers from Iraq to Afghanistan – a move already hinted at by numerous people including General McCrystal. Seems to me like this is another carrover from the last administration: keep the wars going at all cost, and privitize as much as you can so certain people make huge sums of money shedding the blood of Americans as well as thoes we are attcking. Story from Raw Story: US actually increasing personnel in Iraq: More contractors, fewer troops US forces are not withdrawing from Iraq. Well, its soldiers are. But not civilian contractors. Despite President Barack Obama's pledge to withdraw US troops from the war-torn country, the US is planning to award contracts to protect US installations at a cost to taxpayers that could near $1 billion. In fact, the Multi-National Force-Iraq just awarded $485 million in contracts just last week, while Congress enjoyed its summer recess. Five firms will handle private security deals to provide security for US bases. It's a neat rhetorical loophole that will allow US officials to say that the country has withdrawn from Iraq, while its contractors remain. "Under a similar contract with five security contractors that began in September 2007, the MNF-I spent $253 million through March 2009, with needs growing over that 18-month period," the Washington Post's Walter Pincus wrote in Wednesday editions. "That contract, which was to run three years, had a spending limit of $450 million. Pincus cites an Inspector General's report, whose fine print notes that these contracts could swell to a whopping $935 million. An earlier IG report documented manifold allegations of fraud and government waste (PDF here). READ MORE |
