WEEKEND DRIVE IN THEATER: JESUS CAMP 11/08/2009
John Sez: I caught this one a few years back, and thought it was a very insightful look into what is being taught in some of the more militant (at least in my opinion) Charismatic Christian programs aimed at children. Some might call it religion, some would say indoctrination…I leave it to the viewer to decide. Get a snack and pour a drink (grab a pen a paper if you like to take notes like I do) as we present Jesus Camp. John Sez: One of my all time favorite bands, and one of the most underrated in the annals of rock history. An excellent batch of musicians, led by the maniacal Ian Anderson, run through their set at Madison Square Garden in 1978. Although the sound and video quality is VERY 1978, its well worth the watch for both fans and folks who want to check out something musically interesting and different. Enjoy! John Sez: I enjoy a good comedian and, in my humble opinion, Eddie Izzard is one of the best of all time. Very British, very cheeky, very intelligent, very funny. And he doesn’t look all that bad in women’s clothes (which he claims is his preferred mode of dress). So sit back, grab a beverage, and get ready to laugh. NOTE: there is some foul language, so this isn’t kid or work safe! ENJOY! WEEKEND DRIVE IN THEATER - BEFORE MUSIC DIES 09/06/2009
John Sez: An excelent perspective peice on the modern music industry. A bevy of interviews with musicians and industry types, a step by step on how to make a pop star (including the use of auto-tune in the studio), and some great video footage (you GOTTA see the opening clip of Ray Charles and Billy Preston...simply amazing). A very well done docu film and worth watching. NOTE: There is some cursing in just a couple of the interviews, so it's not entirely work/kid safe. Here is a peice of the 'official' blurb for the film: "Narrated by Academy Award® Winner Forest Whitaker, BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES is an unsettling and inspiring look at today’s popular music industry featuring interviews and performances by Erykah Badu, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, Branford Marsalis, ?uestlove and a wide variety of others. The documentary film has built a passionate following as “the most important film a music fan will ever see” (XM Radio) by providing “a balanced overview of the state of the rock scene of America” (The Wall Street Journal) and adding “passion to the eternal debate about the industry” (The New York Times). " Enjoy! The first two albums I ever bought with my own cash were Kiss "Love Gun" and the Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour". Both have a very special place in my musical heart (Magical Mystery Tour is still my favorite Beatles album). Love Gun doesn't have a movie, but the Beatles ablum does, so here 'tis! Sit back, relax, and enjoy! (note: the server for this video is slooooow, so you might want to start the player, then pause it for a few so it loads up a bit) John Sez: A very interesting documentary that I saw a little while back, even better because it does not spotlight the issues in a left-right fashon. As the title implies, the film centers around the Obama administration; specifically who he has appointed, where they came from, and all of their corporate, banking and geo-political ties…which explains a LOT about current administration policy Although some might decry the film as the ramblings of conspiracy theorists, the extensive research has all been footnoted in the bibliography, found here. It’s easy to spout off at the mouth and have very little to offer in the way of backing up one’s claims (like Limbaugh and Glen Beck), but it’s much harder to deny what is covered in this documentary when the whole thing is backed up with legitimate references. Here’s part of the blurb from the films website: “The Obama Deception is a hard-hitting film that completely destroys the myth that Barack Obama is working for the best interests of the American people…It's not about Left or Right: it's about a One World Government. The international banks plan to loot the people of the United States and turn them into slaves on a Global Plantation…Covered in this film: who Obama works for, what lies he has told, and his real agenda. If you want to know the facts and cut through all the hype, this is the film for you.” I’d love to hear what people think about this one… Very few TV shows have captured my A.D.D. addled attention for more than a few minutes at a time. Even fewer caused me to tune in every week, without fail, for years on end. Only one has caused me to go fanatical, and that would be Mystery Science Theater 3000. There’s this guy named Joel, see? He was a janitor of sorts at a place called Gizmonic institute. Also at the institute are two mad scientists who decided that it would be a good idea to launch Joel into space to live on a satellite (the Satellite of Love, to be more specific) and force him to watch some of the worst movies ever made in order to find out how long it will take him to finally loose his mind. But, Joel is a resourceful guy. He ends up building a few robots to keep him company, and to help him through the movies that the mad scientists send him by ‘riffing’ (keeping a funny running commentary about the movie on the screen) on the films. Got it? Good. So, for your pain/pleasure, here is the first MST3k (as we fans call it) episode I was turned on to, "The Amazing Colossal Man". Enjoy! This amazing documentary was put together by the late filmmaker Aaron Russo (better known for more main stream movies like “Trading Places” with Eddie Murphy). This excellent film centers on two subjects: what the IRS is really all about and if the income tax is even legal; and the history and the workings of the Federal Reserve. Although the film is a couple of years old (so much of what’s happening recently with the Federal Reserve is not covered), it is still quite comprehensive and informative, and gives a wealth of background into current events. |
