Who The Heck Is John Crumley?

Picture
Born in a snowstorm in March of 1970, John Crumley wonders why he is writing about himself in this blurb in the third person. Starting out as a drummer (and sometimes bass player), John kicked around the New York music scene for a few years in a few bands (and played with some GREAT musicians), finally decided that the trains were too loud and the Taxi’s too numerous, so he jumped ship to Toledo, Ohio. Unfortunately, John’s skills with a map and compass were not so sure (and he refused to ask for directions in any gas stations); as a result he ended up in Clearwater, Florida.

In the last few years, John taught himself how to play guitar and keyboards, as well as some recording techniques. He now finds himself in Palm Harbor, Florida (Clearwater was waaaaaay too far south) with a family of 6 (1 wife, 3 kids, 1 dog, and himself), a small home recording studio, an aspiration to share the music he creates and the knowledge he accumulates, and to eventually learn how to not refer to himself in the third person.

John's Likes:

Playing and listening to music - A variety of genres.  Currently I’ve been grooving to Liquid Tension Experiment, Jethro Tull, Dream Theater, Cab Calloway, Louie Prima, The Oolas, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Farmer’s Market, Vaartina, Medeski/Martin/Woods, and a lot of classical and stuff from the 20’s and 30’s.

Reading - lots and lots and lots of reading: non-fiction, fiction, news, government releases, white papers, small print, nutritional information on food products – a tad obsessive, no? Currently, after 3 years straight of Non-fiction (on a great variety of subjects),  I just finished the Tarot trilogy by Piers Anthony (a re-read after 20 or so years)and am undertaking the Xanth series (I read the first 8 books in my youth, and decided to return to find out how it all turns out).

Talk radio - NO far left or right wing political radio due to the fact that the majority of these broadcasters offer nothing more than inane, over-simplified, moronic ramblings that deteriorate into nothing more than finger-pointing and misinformation. Generally, I like to listen to folks who think outside the box and/or present factual information. Lately, I’ve been digging Alex Jones and Mike Rivero (What Really Happened).  I really miss Phil Hendrie, the funniest guy on the radio EVER!

Watching (a smidgeon of) TV  - Family Guy ( as well as some other shows on CN’s Adult Swim lineup), Ghost Hunters, Stargate SG1, No Reservations (a very cool show which entertains AND expands one’s world view) and educational shows (history, space, ect.)

Movies - any Mel Brooks, classics (anything with Danny Kaye, Bob Hope, James Coburn - The two Flint movies are classic -  Gene Kelly, and many more),  musicals (Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, The Music Man, and many more), goofy comedies (like  Airplane!),  good sci-fi/fantasy/action  (Lord of the Rings and all the Harry Potter movies are awesome and the Princess Bride is an absolute classic) – and documentaries on subjects that interest me (a broad field).

Video Games – Yeah, I know, I’m pushin’ 40 and still playing video games. Better than watching reality TV shows…

Family – Nothing more important. For better or worse, in sickness and health, nothing is better than family. I have a fantastic wife, 3 awesome kids (one under a year old – a real trip!), a wonderful and smart brother (who’s the daddy of a couple of nephews of mine), a cool dog, and a mother in law that always, ALWAYS makes me coffee when I show up on her doorstep.
